The article of Babu Chempothra deserves serious discussion and some plan of action in order to keep Malankara Orthodox church traditions and heritage in the USA. Many American believers say,"there are lots of signs showing the possibility of a division in Malankara church in the near future".Let us respond and work together to avoid it.
I could not understand many words in the article. MTV should have done a proof reading before posting the NRI achayan's article. It's natural that he forget the Malayalam grammar after spending 40 yrs in US.
As far as I have seen, most of the new generation priests in America are well versed in liturgies and understand their responsibilities much better than their predecessors.
Our young Achens from America are not come to the ministry of our church; not for " angadiyil vandhanavum sadhasil muquasanavum " " Kuppayavum Thoppium and young Kochammaum " but attracted to the teaching and pious life of some of our visiting Bishops and our Diocesan Bishop's sacrifices and concern for our younger generation of this land.Only thing they need is an English version of all our books. I am speasking for them because most of them do not read this article. I can speak for them because I know most of them for years. If our church has to be here for generations to come, they need to be in their language so that they can also understand. The Malankara church will survive here if they were supported with materiels written in English for the yougsters. Mammen Mathew Achen
I totally in agreement with the author. Malankara Orthodox sabha seriously facing a threat in USA and UK. The economic conditions and sanctions blocked the immigration into this coutnries. New Immigrant community was the blood of our sabha, now with the new Achens, studied in western theoliogical seminaries, lacking the malankara culture . Most of these Achens are not even aware of the protocols that they need to follow. Only solution is to get them trained at least for 3 years in Kerala. Let them learn Malayalam and the culture that sabha follows. As Wilson Achen says cultural division is not a so far..
I am in total agreement with the author. Malankara Sabha in USA and UK are facing this cultural division. Just learn how to celebrate Qurbana in Malayalam is not enough. Each and every priest should know the history and traditions of church. With the new generation churchs bubbles out everyday our kids are getting more diverted to them. No one really care about so called Sabha.. That need to be taught in an effective manner.
Mosc people in USA are following everything convenient for them! They never follow basic tradtions like principles/practices of partaking Holy Eucharist! The young people usually attend church by the time of Besmelko ! the members of diocesean council/or representative of Diocese to malankara suriyani kristhiani association Managing committee follow the same! The clergy usually keep silent about this ! Their influence and money (wealth) allow them them to behave the way they like! the Northeast diocese require transfer of clergy urgently!but the Diocesean Bishop do not like to talk about this although many people requested to him about this issue!
( Dear Joice,Will you please add these suggestions to my previous comment) Few Suggestions 1.We have a good number of promising young Achens in America. We need to train them in India to enable them to serve the people with full devotion to Malankara church. 2.The young people must understand that it is because of the sacrificial service of our Metropolitans and Achens in India that we have this amount of Indian orthodox presence in the USA today. We should not consider our visiting spiritual fathers as money makers. Our parents in America came to this country to make money for our livelihood to enhance the quality of our living. 3.Nobody should forget the fact that all our achens from India have suffered a lot for the growth of our church in the USA,thus providing inspiration to our younger achens to opt the Christian ministry as their vocation. 4.Elderly people and Achens must accept and utilize the gifts and potential of our young achens and seminarians for the bright future of Malankara church in USA. 5. In order to avoid separation and division in the church, Young achens must welcome senior clergy men and leaders to youth meetings and conferences to learn Eastern spirituality, family values etc.(Remember that there are thousands of people, who are born and brought up in Kerala, are working as effective teachers in American schools and colleges with their Indian English accent) Let us pray and work together to bring Glory to the Triune God and our Holy Church through the united endeavors of all generations in America. Congratultions to Babu Chempothra for his courage to explain a serious subject that facing American Diocese. In my experiance many senior Achens and elders agree with Babu one hundred percent .I am sure this article will open the eyes of the concerned authorities. Will they take it seriously?. -Koshy John Houston
Dear All if you teach your children basic orthodoxy from beginning ,they will follow it! but most of our MOSC people do not follow that! Most of the parents do not follow orthodoxy and then blame our priests! Arun Mathew, Your comments are baseless/immaterial! How many priests are coming from India to USA for soliciting funds now a days? it is your gesture/mentality which are entirely wrong! Although you are USA you are still an Indian(ethnicity) and they(US) never call/treat you as a white or American
Totally agree with the article by Mr.Babu. Agree with Wilson Achen and Vincent. What we lack is the basic teaching on Malankara orthodoxy. Priests who are ordained in USA are well educated , they study the western theology, but that is not enough for the growth of our orthodoxy. if a Pastor ask a stupid question quoting a verse ( most of the time they quote half verses) our youngsters doesn't have any answer. New Achens ordained in US need to be trained on our Orthodox Church culture, Malayalam language and Orthidox traditions and Protocols. Indian communities talk on their language when they come together, whether its Tamilian , Gujju or Punjabi. They do this to preserve their culture. Malayalee is an exception. I can courageously say the values I learned in my life are from my chuch sunday school teachers and priests and thurumeni’s. I learn how to show respect by respecting our thirumeni’s. This thought process –Thirumeni or Achen coming to USA are for money – totally wrong. If we don’t help our church who would help our church ?. There are lot of efficient hands in India than me , why GOD pick me to be a part of this large nation ? .. HE need you and me to be the building blocks of HIS church. We need our church to be flourished in USA. GOD sent St. Thomas to establish church in India not USA. HE was having plans for US too.. We are now the part of HIS plans. Please work towards the prosperity of our church in USA. Let our children grow in malankara orthodoxy as we did. Jiju John - Dallas
